Women & Heart Disease: Heart Attacks Without Chest Pain
Two out of five women have heart attacks without experiencing chest pain, according to a study of more than one million people. The study findings may partly explain why middle-aged women are more likely to die from a heart attack than men, despite more heart attacks occurring in men of the same age. Although chest pain or discomfort is the most common heart attack symptom, fatigue, nausea, shortness of breath and pain or numbness in the jaw, arms or back can also signal a blocked artery cutting off vital oxygen and nutrients from the heart.

Atlantic Medical Imaging Introduces Powerful New Weapon in Battle against Lung Cancer.
A recent study by the National Cancer Institute reveals encouraging news about the use of low dose CT lung screenings in early stage diagnosis of lung cancer.
Atlantic Medical Imaging (AMI) is now offering low dose CT lung screenings, a breakthrough new tool in the fight against lung cancer. Today, 85% of patients diagnosed with lung cancer in the United States will die from it within five years. With over 160,000 deaths per year, lung cancer has become the number one cancer killer in America, claiming more lives than breast, colon, and prostate cancer combined.
AMI is hoping to alter those statistics with early detection. Low dose CT lung screenings of high-risk patients can detect lung cancers in their earliest stage, when up to 92% can be cured.
“Early detection improves patient outcomes and saves lives,” said Robert M. Glassberg, president and CEO of Atlantic Medical Imaging. “The low dose CT scan has emerged as one of the most promising tools for early detection of lung cancer in high risk individuals. In one of the largest clinical trials ever conducted (the National Lung Screening Trial), the National Cancer Institute recently concluded that annual CT screenings in high risk individuals resulted in a 20 percent reduction in mortality compared with conventional x-ray screening.”
AMI is one of a select few facilities nation-wide to offer this state-of-the-art diagnostic imaging. The vast majority of the others are large university medical centers in major metropolitan cities.
CT lung screening is a noninvasive procedure that uses low-dose x-rays to screen the lungs for cancer in just 10 seconds. The CT scan is a painless procedure in which a special computerized tomography imaging machine rotates rapidly around the body, taking more than 100 pictures in sequence.
“The scan is so sensitive that we can now detect nodules that are too small to be seen on a conventional chest x-ray, which makes it an excellent tool in lung cancer screening,” Dr. Glassberg added. “By detecting malignant tumors in an early stage, intervention can occur at a time when the cancer is localized in the lungs and still curable.”
The low dose CT lung screening is intended for patients age 55-74 who have smoked at least one pack of cigarettes a day for 30 years or more, or at least two packs of cigarettes for 15 years or more. In addition, individuals ages 50-54 who have smoked at least one pack a day for 20 years and with risk factors such as a family history of lung cancer or asbestos exposure. While a CT scan can cost up to $400, for a limited time, AMI is offering the screenings no cost for those at high risk.
The screening is performed by subspecialty-trained chest radiologists, and is available at all AMI office locations in Atlantic, Cape May, Ocean and Monmouth counties. Participants will need to obtain a referral from their healthcare provider. To schedule an appointment, call (609) 677-XRAY (9729). Cape May County residents may call (609) 463-9500, and Ocean and Monmouth County residents may call (732) 223-XRAY (9729).

Atlantic Medical Imaging in Brick, NJ named a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence
Atlantic Medical Imaging Is Awarded The Highest Designation: A Breast Imaging Center of Excellence
Atlantic Medical Imaging located in Brick, NJ, has been designated a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence by the American College of Radiology (ACR). By awarding facilities the status of a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence, the ACR recognizes breast imaging centers that have earned accreditation in all of the ACR’s voluntary, breast-imaging accreditation programs.
"Our commitment to excellence in breast care is demonstrated by the voluntary accreditation in all of the related specialty areas by the American College of Radiology," said Dr. Robert Glassberg, President and CEO of Atlantic Medical Imaging. “By ensuring that our staff and equipment are meeting the standards of excellence set forth nationwide, we can be confident in delivering safe, accurate and effective care for our patients."
The breast imaging services at Atlantic Medical Imaging are fully accredited in mammography, stereotactic breast biopsy, breast ultrasound and ultrasound-guided breast biopsy. Peer-review evaluations, conducted in each breast imaging modality by board-certified physicians and medical physicists who are experts in the field, have determined that Atlantic Medical Imaging has achieved high practice standards in image quality, personnel qualifications, facility equipment, quality control procedures, and quality assurance programs.
SJ Top Docs for 2011
Each year SJ Magazine surveys local physicians, asking them which of their peers they would choose to care for a family member. The votes poured in, and South Jersey doctors selected physicians in a variety of specialties -- kind of like creating a medical dream team.
Three AMI radiologists made the "Dream Team" for 2011. Congratulations to Dr. Robert Glassberg, Dr. David Dowe, and Dr. Craig Glick for being selected SJ Top Docs for 2011.

A Little Exercise Can Go A Long Way, Study Shows.
A little exercise goes a long way, a new study suggests. Only 15 minutes of it per day reduces one's risk of cancer and adds an average of three years to a person's life.
CT Lung Cancer Screenings show 20% reduction in lung cancer deaths.
A National Cancer Institute trial of 53,000 smokers and ex-smokers has shown that using CT to screen for lung cancer instead of a chest X-ray has reduced deaths from lung cancer by 20 percent over just five years.

Mammograms Reduce Breast Cancer Deaths by 30%, study shows
Breast cancer is the most frequently diagnosed cancer in women in the United States, not including skin cancer, and is second only to lung cancer as a cause of cancer deaths. One of the longest mammogram studies followed more than 100,000 Swedish women for 29 years. The researchers found that seven years of mammograms made for 30 percent fewer breast cancer deaths years down the road, when compared with women who didn't receive mammograms. AMI offers a Truly Open 1.2T High-Field MRI at the Brick office
Atlantic Medical Imaging recently installed a new high-field open MRI, the Hitachi Oasis, in their Brick, New Jersey location. The Oasis system offers a new open MRI alternative, with high-field strength performance, for patients who have had challenges tolerating exams in the traditional closed-type MRI units.
Open MRI has historically been an option for large patients and patients with claustrophobia who have challenges tolerating the confinement of traditional bore-type MRI, but open MRI technology has not previously delivered high resolution image quality comparable to conventional high-field strength MRI systems. The Oasis system combines wide-open magnet design and 1.2 Tesla high field-strength technologies, so patients can have a comfortable experience and referring physicians get the high quality images they prefer for a confident diagnosis.
The 1.2T Hitachi Oasis Open MRI enables AMI to image claustrophobic patients and patients up to 660 lbs with image quality comparable to the 1.5 T units. The scanner also possesses the newest pulse sequences for advanced musculoskeletal, neurological, and body imaging, as well as RADAR to reduce motion artifact. The Oasis is further enhanced by an array of anatomically specific receiver coils that allow advanced imaging applications ranging from vascular to orthopedic imaging.
The Oasis is the most recent addition to the AMI MRI armamentarium. Providing the latest imaging technologies along with sub-specialty reads by our musculoskeletal radiologists and neuroradiologists, AMI remains in the forefront of MRI imaging.
For more information about the Hitachi Oasis system’s capabilities or to schedule an appointment at Atlantic Medical Imaging, please call (732) 223-XRAY (9729).
