Ultrasound Preparations
You should wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing for your ultrasound exam. Other preparation depends on the type of examination you will have.
The following tests do not require any preparation:
- Breast
- Kidneys
- Scrotal
- Thyroid
- Vascular
The following tests require preparation:
Instructions for Patients:
Pelvic
- Finish drinking one quart (32 ounces) of liquids (water, soda, juice, coffee, etc.)
45 minutes prior to exam. Do not urinate.
Endovaginal Exam
- Same as pelvic: Finish drinking one quart (32 ounces) of liquids
(water, soda, juice, coffee, etc.) 45 minutes prior to exam. Do not urinate.
The endovaginal exam is done after the pelvic study is completed and you have urinated.
Gall Bladder and Abdomen
- Clear liquid only if patient has to take medication; otherwise nothing to eat or
drink after midnight.
Pancreas
- Clear liquid only if patient has to take medication; otherwise nothing to eat or
drink after midnight.
Obstetrical
- Finish drinking one quart (32 ounces) of liquids (water, soda, juice, coffee, etc.)
45 minutes prior to exam. Do not urinate.
