New Jersey Nuclear Medicine

What is Nuclear Medicine?

Some patients feel anxious when they hear the term “nuclear medicine”. Radiation and nuclear activity are not words commonly associated with health, but we can assure you that nuclear medicine is a proven and highly effective imaging technique that has been used for more than 60 years. Though it is called “nuclear” medicine, the amount of radiation patients are exposed to is roughly the same as a standard X-ray. Various studies have confirmed this procedure safe for patients without any long-term side effects.

At Atlantic Medical Imaging, we offer many types of nuclear medicine procedures. Nuclear medicine is often combined with other imaging procedures such as CT and MRI scanning. Our facilities are equipped to provide patients with an optimal diagnostic imaging experience.

How Does Nuclear Imaging Work?

In nuclear medicine, a special dye is inserted into the body through an IV injection, or by swallowing a pill or liquid, depending on whatever will help it reach the designated area faster. This dye creates a highlight on imaging scans like X-ray and CT scanning, making it easier for the radiologist to distinguish details in the images. With nuclear medicine, doctors can examine damage to bones and tissue from infections, monitor the spread of cancer, assess blood flow in the cardiovascular system, and more.

There are many different types of nuclear imaging procedures. You can learn more about them from the pages below:

At AMI, we employ dual-detect nuclear medicine cameras. This unique technology allows both sides of the body to be scanned simultaneously, which can reduce exam time by up to 50%. Whatever procedure you require, our team will be here to answer your questions and guide you through the process.
